I saw this little skull jumper the other day at David Jones and thought it was lovely. It's just machine made out of acrylic of course, but I love the hood, how the stitches are picked up from the bottom of the neckband and I love the colours and the stripes. I am going to steal the idea for my own designs. I think I would put a cashmere mix or a really nice soft acrylic in the hood so its lovely and soft around the neck.
I took a photo of the price too. Eighty dollars for a machine knit acrylic jumper that is probably made in China. I wonder how much the machine operator was paid for their efforts. People always ask me to knit things for their kids and offer to pay me but I have never agreed to do so and I never would. I don't knit with cheapo plasticky acrylic for a start, so a quality acrylic or acrylic and wool mix is going to be at least five dollars a ball and a four year old needs about seven or eight balls of wool. And then there is the hours of knitting, it takes hours and hours to knit a jumper. That is when I get a chance of course. And then there is the time to factor in which is pretty precious to me these days and I have a queue a mile long of things I want to make that I will never get to.
And I have my doubts that people are even talking about something close to eighty dollars when they are speaking of this payment they want to make.
I love to make gifts for people though. Of things I want to make because I felt like it.
Anyway, not sure of the point of this really. Maybe the irony of something so cheap and nastily made being $80 in a poncy shop but real quality made with love in every stitch is viewed as being something you can buy on the cheap. Well, you can't. Not from me anyway. Go and ask someone's nanna ;)
